Florida Crane Collapse Kills Two

first_img“Our hearts are heavy at this moment for the two deceased individuals … and the additional injured workers,” she said in a statement. The part that fell was a section workers had been raising to extend the equipment’s reach, Miami fire spokesman Ignatius Carroll said. The crane’s main vertical section was intact. One of those killed died in the house, and the other died at a hospital, Moss said. The section smashed through the Spanish-tiled roof of the two-story home, which police spokesman Delrish Moss said had been used in the 1998 comedy “There’s Something About Mary.” Emergency workers and dogs found no evidence of trapped victims, but fire officials said rescue efforts were hampered because the crane section remained unstable. Rescue workers were trying to secure a severely damaged wall before re-entering the house. The subcontractor, Morrow Equipment Co., and the tower developer, Royal Palms Communities, did not return phone messages seeking comment. Five other workers were injured, one critically, at the site of the 40-plus-story luxury condo tower on Biscayne Bay. David Martinez, 31, a pipe fitter, was on the fourth floor of the condo tower eating lunch when the crash occurred. The company is cooperating with investigators, she said. Mary Costello, a senior vice president for Bovis Lend Lease Holdings Inc., which was managing the construction, said the accident occurred when a subcontractor tried to raise the crane section and it came loose. “It was like a small earthquake,” he said. “We looked outside, and we couldn’t even see.” It took several minutes for the dust to clear, Martinez said. The state of Florida does not license or regulate tower cranes or crane operators, but bills moving through both houses of the legislature would change that.Yesterday’s accident came 10 days after a 20-story crane toppled at a Manhattan construction site, killing seven people. MIAMI — A 20-foot-long chunk of construction crane plummeted 30 floors at the site of a high-rise condominium yesterday in Miami, killing two workers and smashing into a home that the contractor used for storage, police said. The U.S. Office of Safety and Health Administration had two investigators at the site.last_img read more

Reece James Stars As Chelsea See Of Brighton In Season Opener

first_imgChelsea defender Reece James scored a scorching effort from range and got an assist as the Blues began their Premier League season with a hard-fought victory at Brighton.Frank Lampard has spent more than £200m in the transfer window but could only start two of his new recruits the German pair Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. The latter earned a penalty which was calmly dispatched by Jorghino to put the Blues in the lead.Brighton had been the more impressive side prior to falling behind and passed up numerous chances to score a goal of theirs either side of conceding.Graham Potter’s side were level in the second half through Leandro Trossard strike from just outside the box although Chelsea’s keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga didn’t do his battered reputation any getting beat easily. But the Seagulls’ equaliser didn’t last long as James powered in an unstoppable effort past Matt Ryan to restore Chelsea’s lead.Kurt Zouma then met James’ corner – his shot deflected in off Brighton defender Adam Webster to make it 3-1.While the score line suggested Chelsea were vastly superior, the reality was anything but and Brighton who could have drawn level at 2-1 when Lewis Dunk missed a great chance, will rue their profligacy.Earlier, Wolverhampton Wanderers got their season off to a winning start as two goals inside the opening six minutes from Raul Jimenez and Romain Saiss gave them victory over last season’s surprise package Sheffield United.RelatedEden Hazard impresses in hard-fought win over BrightonDecember 16, 2018In “England”Huddersfield Town Secure Premier League Survival With Battling Draw As Manchester City Set New Points RecordMay 9, 2018In “England”EPL Round-Up: Place Stun United, Lampard’s Maiden Win, Salah On The DoubleAugust 24, 2019In “England”last_img read more
