Coronavirus forces cancellation of Japan sumo tournament

first_imgLast Updated: 5th May, 2020 07:49 IST Coronavirus Forces Cancellation Of Japan Sumo Tournament Japan’s sumo association said it would cancel its upcoming tournament and aim to hold the following one behind closed doors, as the country extended shutdown SUBSCRIBE TO US LIVE TV Japan’s sumo association said Monday it would cancel its upcoming tournament and aim to hold the following one behind closed doors, as the country extended a state of emergency over the coronavirus. The next sumo “basho” or tournament had been scheduled to begin on May 24, after organizers of the nation’s ancient sport delayed the event by two weeks over the pandemic. But chairman Hakkaku said in a statement that the association had decided to cancel the May tournament “in order to secure the health and safety of fans and people involved.”Sumo tournament cancelledThe announcement came shortly after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe extended a state of emergency over the virus until the end of May. It is the first cancellation of a basho since 2011 when a spring sumo tournament was scrapped over a bout-fixing scandal. That was the first cancellation in more than half a century. There are usually six tournaments across Japan each year, and the association said it “aims” to hold the July basho without spectators and would move the tournament from Nagoya in central Japan to Tokyo where sumo wrestlers are based. The outbreak in Japan has been smaller than in many countries, with around 15,000 cases and 510 deaths confirmed so far, but the government declared a state of emergency in seven regions about a month ago and later expanded it nationwide. A handful of low-ranking wrestlers and trainees, as well as a stable master, have tested positive for the virus. The spring basho, held in March in Osaka, took place without spectators, with wrestlers surrounded by just a handful of judges in the empty arena. But it was broadcast live on national TV, where viewers could hear sounds normally drowned out by the crowd, including wrestlers slapping their bellies and scraping their feet on the clay ring. Some rituals were amended, including the traditional ladle of water that a winning wrestler offers to the next in the ring. Image credits: AP FOLLOW US First Published: 5th May, 2020 07:49 ISTcenter_img Press Trust Of India WATCH US LIVE Written By COMMENTlast_img read more

Thursday Night Football Betting Preview: Eagles-Packers odds, trends, pick

first_imgThe Thursday Night Football battle in Week 4 features a couple of top-notch NFC teams that could very well square off in the playoffs. The Eagles visit the Packers with nice weather projected at Lambeau Field. The Eagles are now 1-2 after losing back-to-back games and the Packers are 3-0, largely due to their defensive prowess. The Packers enter as four-point home favorites, and based on betting trends, the public (and BetQL) agrees with that number. As of Wednesday night, 62 percent of total tickets had been bet on Green Bay while 67 percent of the money had, as well. You can see all public betting data for Week 4 contests on BetQL! Ertz hasn’t exactly been dominant this season, posting 17 catches on 30 targets for 190 yards and no touchdowns. He ranks 34th among tight ends in DVOA and has the worst separation numbers among tight ends. Ertz appears to have lost a step and this should give the young, fleet-footed Savage opportunities to break up passes and make plays. Things certainly won’t be easy for the safety, but he has proven to be a difference-maker in his first three games and should play a major factor against Philadelphia’s pass attack. The defensive prowess of the Packers should prove to be too much for Wentz and the Eagles offense. The Packers should cover their -4 spread and win the game at home, where Rodgers owns a 107.7 passer rating over his career.BetQL’s NFL Model agrees, and lists Green Bay as an even larger favorite. Find out how large! WEEK 4 DFS LINEUPS:DK cash | DK GPP | FD cash | FD GPP | Y! cash | Y! GPPBelow we break down three reasons why the Packers look like a good bet tonight.MORE WEEK 4 DFS: Top values | Stacks | Lineup BuilderAaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur will figure it out sooner rather than laterAfter facing some high-quality defenses (Chicago, Minnesota, Denver), Aaron Rodgers should have an easier time against the Eagles. The Philadelphia secondary has allowed the fourth-most passing yards in the NFL to this point, and the unit as a whole is allowing 26 points per game. Even worse, Philadelphia has allowed 50 first half points to start the season.MORE: DraftKings Showdown lineup | TNF start-or-sitRodgers has still posted a 96.5 passer rating even with his below-standard stats. Things have been great in the first half for Rodgers and LaFleur, as the quarterback has racked up 429 yards and four touchdowns in the first half of three games. Rodgers’ 112.9 passer rating is legitimate, as well, but things have changed after halftime. Rodgers has 218 passing yards and no scores in the second half this season, with his rating dropping to 71.7 and completion percentage dipping from 66.1 percent to 54.1 percent. The offense has accumulated less than half as many first downs in the second half of games.Despite all of the second half issues, the Packers are 3-0 and have won by seven, five, and 11 points, respectively, in their three contests. The offense is having success, but they’re playing things too safe after getting ahead. This should be the week that Rodgers and LaFleur get it together and pummel a Philadelphia secondary that is getting thrashed and will be without cornerback Ronald Darby. Davante Adams should have a nice game with Darby sidelined.WEEK 4 NON-PPR RANKINGS:Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | KickerGreen Bay’s defense has benen eliteThe Packers defense has been incredible in the early stages of 2019, allowing just 11.7 points per game. They’re holding quarterbacks to just 197.3 yards through the air per contest. Green Bay’s minus-27.5 percent defense DVOA (Football Outsiders’ Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) ranks as third-best in 2019 and have the most total takeaways at eight.Carson Wentz has topped 300 yards just once this season against the  Redskins, but he doesn’t figure to achieve that this week, even with Alshon Jeffery playing (DeSean Jackson is doubtful). Wentz ranks 13th in DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement) and 15th in DVOA. This will be his toughest matchup yet. Wentz’s two interceptions came during their one road contest this season, and it’s reasonable to expect some turnovers against a defense that leads the league in takeaways. Week 4 Picks Advice: Pick ’em pools | Survivor poolsDeSean Jackson’s Absence Will Free Up Darnell SavageThe Packers used the No. 21 pick in the most recent NFL draft on safety Darnell Savage. The Maryland product has paid off thus far, deflecting three passes, intercepting a pass, and forcing a fumble. He has been a major factor for Green Bay’s thriving defense and he should be forced to make big plays on Thursday night to keep the Packers ahead. With DeSean Jackson likely out, Savage should have more of an opportunity to come down on receivers hard without any fear of a missed assignment. Jackson’s blistering speed can bust the top off of any secondary, but Savage won’t deal with any of that. Instead, he will likely focus on snaps in the slot from Nelson Agholor and looks to Zach Ertz.last_img read more
