According to a survey by the British Council among English speakers, about forty thousand people agree, the most beautiful English word is “mother”. Today is mother’s day; the day where we honour the influential women in our lives.The idea of honouring mothers is certainly not a new one. Since the time of the Greeks, women were celebrated with the festival of Rhea, the mother of the Gods. The Romans too, had a mother of all Gods, Magna Mater, and every March, people would bring gifts to her temple to appease her. The modern idea of mothers day, however, (flowers, family time and gifts), more closely resembles that of “Mothering Sunday” which originated in Europe in the 16th century. Mothering Sunday was observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Affluent people returned to their “mother” church bearing presents (often flowers), as offerings to their mothers. For the poorer, the day served as an opportunity to meet. Many servants lived far away from their families and on Mothering Sunday, were given time to go home. Often, it was one of the only days a year that the entire family could spend time together. As time passed, this day largely faded into oblivion, with the traditions being absorbed into today’s secular celebration of mother’s day.However, not many of us may know that the worldwide celebration of Mother’s day that we have today is in large part, a tip of the hat to one woman in particular, Mrs. Ann Jarvis. Jarvis lived in West Virginia in the 1850’s and was responsible for organizing several “Mother’s Day work clubs”, and through these clubs, she worked to combat the poor sanitation that contributed to the high child mortality rate. They nursed the sick, and provided medicine to the poor, and proper treatment to those with infectious diseases. During the Civil war, Mrs. Jarvis rallied four of her clubs to pledge to treat injured men from both sides of the war. After the war, she attempted to reunite families whose familiar bonds had been threated by polarized views during the war. In keeping with this goal, she organized a “Mother’s Friendship Day”, explaining that if friends and family were to be reconnected, it would be accomplished most easily by appealing to the love and respect everyone had for their mother. The event was well planned and executed, and reportedly ended with numerous in tearful embrace of each other. Following this success, several other “Mother’s friendship days” were held.After Mrs. Jarvis passed, her Daughter Anna remembered something her mother had always said, “I hope that someone, sometime, will found a Memorial Mothers Day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.” It was then that Ann decided a day must be established in her mother’s memory, promising “The time and place is here and the someone is your daughter, and by the grace of God, you shall have that Mothers Day.” After writing tirelessly to ministers, business people and politicians, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it official: Mother’s Day would be a national holiday held each year on the second Sunday in May.Although Anna had been successful, she was distraught with how commercialized Mother’s day evolved to become. She remained steadfast that the day was about sentiment and not profit, and once admitted she regretted starting the holiday because of what it became.In some way, I agree with Anna. Showing love and appreciation shouldn’t have to come at a cost. Most times it’s not about the amount of money something cost, but rather the amount of thought given to something. Maybe we should keep this in mind for out latest celebration.

I don’t understand this one at all. Rock ‘n Roller Coaster themed door hangers. I’m putting out a public plea asking a simple question:“WHY?”Why would people buy these? Apparently they are a growing trend as @Blog_Mickey just bought one for its a small world and apparently already owns one for the Haunted Mansion. I get “Do Not Disturb” door hangers for hotels. I don’t understand the use of them in real houses and apartments. Is this what kids use today instead of a sock on the door handle? Originally $6.99, now $2.99.Door hanger. WHAT? I’m beginning to the think my beloved Tsum Tsums are near the end of their run. My local Target store seems to be phasing them out, and it has been a while since any new offerings made their way to the Outlets. This set features “micro” Tsum Tsums and is themed to a 1950s diner. I didn’t see an original price, but it has been reduced to $9.99. As of this writing, the exact same set is available on ShopDisney for $12.99, reduced from the original price of $19.95.Tsums.Belle plush. Originally $24.99, now $12.99. In general, January brings one specific thing to the Outlets – Christmas Junk – and this month did not fail to disappoint. With me covering the Disney Outlet Store on I-Drive and Secret Shopper Ben Wszalek at Vineland (see end of every Outlet Report for more details on each location), we not only got to see a whole bunch of Christmas items, but a lot of other stuff featuring the Disney Cruise Line, the little Orange Bird, The Incredibles, and even Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, a land that isn’t even open yet. I always loved the style of figures they made for the game and that they all had a consistent look. For example, their version of Captain America looked just like the style used for Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean or Rapunzel from Tangled. I never played the game, but I liked collecting the figures. Long story short, with the game cancelled, Disney released a new series of figures with the same artistic design, just bigger, and under the “Toybox” brand. I hope they sell well because I would love to see this line grow. The Black Widow figure was originally $14.99, now $6.99.I’m depending on all of YOU to support this line because at $15 a pop there’s no way I’m buying more than two or three of these unless they hit the Outlets.Black Widow.Kinda regretting not buying this Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! keychain for $3.99.Breakout!Emoji things that you can attach to your own keychain or who knows what. Now 99 cents each.Emojis.ESPN themed magnet/bottle opener. WHO IS THIS MADE FOR?! Who is that big of a fan of the ESPN brand itself and thinks “I wish I had a magnet with a pithy pun on it.” Originally $8.95, now $3.99.Magnet.Magnet for Luigi’s. Reduced to $3.99.Magnet.We’ve already seen a lot of 2018 branded items come to the Outlets but get ready for even more in the coming months. I like Star Wars as much as the next person, but I would have liked to see me try to get a Star Wars Logo ornament on my Christmas tree without my girlfriend repeatedly hitting me across the head with a cinnamon broom. This was originally $21.99. Imagine that. $22 to put a Star Wars logo on your Christmas tree. A STAR WARS LOGO. Do sneaker fans buy Nike Swoosh logos for their Christmas tree? Fans of Cap’n Crunch? Batman? Anything?!And wait a minute, does that say… ORNAMENY?Ornament.Okay, the following two items would be really cute if you had kids young enough to wear them. L’ill Han Solo and Chewbacca jackets . Now I admit, I’ve only seen Solo once compared to the dozens (if not hundreds) of times I’ve seen every other Star Wars movie, but this quote makes actually no sense if you know the character. Okay, let’s for the sake of argument agree that Qi’ra said “We’re doing this my way” (even though I’m pretty sure she didn’t). What’s that supposed to mean? Her “way” was selling out. She never did the right thing, she did what she needed to survive, aligning with the WORST people along the way. WHY WOULD WE DO ANYTHING HER WAY?!!!This exact same shirt works with Rey in the spot of Qi’ra. She does things her way to at least try and make things right, even if its not in her best interest (such as turning down the big offer for BB-8). There was a whole bunch of these Dorfman-Pacific hats and purses. My girlfriend actually picked up one for herself and her mother as a birthday present. I had almost no interest so you’re only getting a picture of one matching bag and hat, although there were probably about 5-15 different types (that all looked pretty much the same to me when asked “how does this look?”). Purse was originally $49.99, now $19.99 while the hat was originally $39.99, now $11.99.“Is this a trick? That is the exact same hat you just asked me about.” (My answer was allegedly wrong as apparently it was a different hat.)Goofy hats, like the one the Genie wears at the end of Aladdin. Both are in Orlando Premium Outlet shopping complexes, and they are called Disney’s Character Warehouse, presumably because The Land Of Misfit Toys was already trademarked. There is one Character Warehouse located on International Drive close to Universal Studios (4951 International Dr, Orlando, FL 32819), and the other is on Vineland Avenue, right across I-4 near the exits to Disney World (8200 Vineland Ave, Orlando, FL 32821). They do not ship. There are items at the Outlets that you can buy both in Disney stores along with the Shop Disney Parks app, but you will be paying full retail for the items.I often get asked “which store is better?” That depends. Vineland is close to Walt Disney World, while the I-Drive location is a hop, skip, and jump away from the Universal Orlando Resort. The Vineland Disney Outlet Store is much, MUCH bigger than the I-Drive location. However, the Vineland outlets in general are much, MUCH busier than I-Drive. Each have their pros and cons, and ultimately they carry much of the same items. Next week 2nd place check-in app Gowalla says it will launch at least the beginning of something a small but fascinating group of robot magicians has long waited for: a write-capable API.What Kind of Apps Might We See?Imagine a mobile app that let you check-in at all the famous art museums of the world, post photos of yourself outside them and see which museums your friends have been to. Or the best places in the world to eat grilled cheese sandwiches, if that’s your thing.Niche topical apps like that could become easier than ever to create and tie-together with larger more established location based social network providers with the availability of multiple write APIs. You could have your cheese sandwich check-ins show up in your Gowalla and Foursquare social networks, if you want, or you could view and use an app built on top of those APIs that only published and displayed check-ins at cheese sandwich related places. It’s really all about cheese sandwiches.Leading check-in app Foursquare has an API, or Application Programming Interface, that developers can already build software on top of that reads Foursquare data and can publish check-ins to Foursquare as well. But competitor Gowalla has had a read-only API, meaning 3rd party apps could display user location data but couldn’t publish back to Gowalla.Gowalla developer Adam Keys told the company’s developer email list today that unlike previous promises a write-API was coming “next week,” this time he means it. “The good news is that I think I’ve got the foundation in place,” he wrote. “I’m hoping to write up the docs and get *something* out next week, even if it’s not complete API access.”The Gowalla apps include one thing that Foursquare does not – the ability to upload photos of places along with your check-in. Might that be a part of the new Gowalla API? We certainly hope so.What Does This Mean?It means there’s more than one game in town. There’s a very big difference between one hot check-in app you can publish to and two. As ReadWriteWeb’s resident hacker and geofreak Tyler Gillies told me this afternoon, “I think this will really change the game as far as people’s ability to create applicatons that allow you to check into a venue on multiple services.”The value of a multi-platform check-in app is that you don’t have to choose, you can participate in and see your friends’ activity across services you yourself don’t spend a lot of time on.At the same time, it means you get to choose. If everyone in the world was on AT&T and they couldn’t call out to Verizon, you’d never leave one service because it would mean you’d lose contact with your friends. Enter interoperability and you’ve got customer choice, vendor competition and a new wave of innovation.At least that could be how it turns out with regard to the addition of interoperable Place streams across multiple vendors.Foursquare today lets a user opt-in to have news and reviews from favorite organizations like the Huffington Post, the Wall St. Journal and the Independent Film Channel pushed automatically to their phones when they check-in near a place that those organizations have annotated. That’s hot and it’s just the beginning of the kind of features these kinds of location apps will be able to offer in the future. Like a robot that’s been struck by lightning.A service provider or developer can offer software users a lot if they know what the user likes, who the user is friends with and how recent all that data is. Add knowing where people, places and things are and you’ve got a big jump in potential recombination of factors. Not just for location apps themselves either, but in all kinds of apps that use the location data such apps make it easy and compelling to publish.Maybe even with pictures.

Tourism and Entertainment Minister, Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill, says a special unit is to be established within the Ministry to direct the development of linkages with other Ministries and agencies, in an effort to boost provisions within the sector. Addressing a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank, Dr. McNeill said an advisory committee, comprising GraceKennedy’s Chief Executive Officer, Don Wehby; Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) President, Evelyn Smith; and Financial Analyst, Ralston Hyman, was set up earlier this year, to assist in guiding the formation of the unit, which is expected to be established early in 2013. The overall undertaking is being headed by Permanent Secretary, Jennifer Griffiths. Minister McNeill said that the setting up of the unit is to ensure that Jamaica can gain the maximum benefit from the tourism industry, which has welcomed more than two million stopover and cruise ship visitors so far this year. This, he said, by encouraging increased expenditure by visitors, through the provision of more local products and services. “So, we have been working very hard on the linkages. Primarily, we have been focusing on agriculture and manufacturing, which are…two main industries that benefit from it (tourism). Of course, we…recognize that there are others – the entertainment sector, the transport sector, and many others, but we have been dealing with these,” he outlined. Dr. McNeill said that as part of the process meetings have been held with stakeholders, including the JHTA, with the most recent consultation held in Kingston last week. “We had a frank discussion. We looked at the concerns, and we discussed the way going forward and I think the meeting was very successful and it takes (us)…one step closer,” he stated. The consultative approach, he pointed out, is to ensure the stakeholders’ full input in creating a process that will benefit all interests. “The great advantage I have, right now, is the fact that the Ministry of Agriculture, and Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, are working very closely with us. We are working with some of the groups in agriculture (and) we are working with the manufacturers; so there is a lot of input,” he stated. “What we are finding is that everybody is excited to work in the best interest of Jamaica and the best way to do that is to continue working with these…organizations, private sector and otherwise, and following their advice,” he stated. Minister McNeill informed that some of the recommendations already proposed include, establishing an e-commerce platform, and developing certain information flows, so that manufacturers for example, will know what the needs of the tourism industry are “and the needs that we are going to have, going forward.” “Information also has to go to the tourism sector on what is available in the manufacturing sector; so there is that information flow. And then, out of that, what you will then start to see are the possibilities, because we will see things that we don’t have that, maybe, the tourism sector needs, and then you will have the manufacturers being able to invest in that. We have to ensure that we can maximize the effect of those visitors that we bring to the economy of Jamaica.” Dr. McNeill stated.
